Painting an early 1900's Quadraplex in Richmond, Virginia's Fan District using Benjamin Moore Scuff-X Matte Finish Paint- Beauty and the Beast!

This was a fun project, restoring the beauty of the walls in a Victorian-style Quadraplex in Richmond, Virginia's Fan District. This distinctive four-apartment, Quadraplex has beautiful features. We first scraped and primed. Then, we used quick-dry plaster on the walls. We finished with Benjamin Moore Scuff-X product with a matte finish. As you can see, the results were stunning!

Walls were old. Over one hundred years! Back then, a cement-like mixture was applied to walls that were covered in thin lathing-boards. After that dried, a plaster was spread over top and then sanded. The process on these types of old homes is the same. Instead of cement, Vermiculite is used over lathing strips to give plaster something to grab hold of. After the Vermiculite dries, a layer of quick-dry plaster is spread over the Vermiculite and after it dries, sanded. This process was used extensively on this old house.

Customer decided to use Benjamin Moore's Scuff-X Paint. A beautiful, and harder finish. This product is perfect to use on homes and in high-trafficed areas.

Painting begins! Cutting-in (a few inches are brushed over the first few inches of wall-space around all of the walls that we are painting, before rolling.

The process was labor intensive, but the results were well worth it! We couldn't be happier with the results. Looking at this old building with it's distinctive trim and moldings, is like looking at a piece of history.
